We tend to think of wedding dresses as being so special that we could only ever possibly wear on your wedding day — but what about taking a more eco-friendly approach, by purchasing a sustainable wedding dress you can wear again?
Why You Should Purchase a Sustainable Wedding Dress
Fashion is one of the main contributors to the destruction of our planet and just because your wedding dresses price tag is higher than the seasonal styles of the high street, doesn’t mean it doesn’t fall into the fast-fashion category.
When you consider the labor and resources that go into creating your gorgeous wedding gown (and getting it to your doorstep) against the time it spends actually being worn and on display for your wedding guests to see, it’s hard to deny that your wedding dress doesn’t fall into the sustainable fashion category.
It’s time to consider a sustainable wedding dress! Why? Check out this video.
Are Expensive Wedding Dresses Worth It?
Whenever I’m making a big fashion purchase, like a gorgeous new leather handbag or a sexy new pair of high-waisted jeans, I always consider the cost per wear.
Same goes when I justify my expensive-but-worth-it Lululemon WunderUnder purchase against cheaper brands. Here’s how:
Each week, these yoga tights make it into my laundry basket without fail, so I know these are worn at least once per week.
I keep each pair for at least 3-4 years, so that means I likely get at least 200 wears out of each. With the tights retailing for about $110CAD, that means, every wear costs me just 55c!
Now, let’s apply this same logic to your expensive wedding dress: $2,000 dress x 1 wear = $2,000 per wear. Yikes!
Your Wedding Dress is Sentimental
Though the buying and selling of second-hand wedding dresses is on the rise, if you’re like most brides (including my mother!) you’ll want to keep your wedding dress after the wedding because you have a sentimental attachment to it.
This is the inevitable and sad fate for most wedding dresses: to be worn once or twice only to be encased in a special box where it will sit, in the back of your closet for the rest of eternity.
This feels sad to me for two reasons:
- Your wedding dress is likely the most stunning item of clothing you own, the detail and energy that went into its construction are second to none. It deserves to be on display for far longer than just the 8-hours of your wedding day.
- Because your wedding dress is so special and so fancy, there isn’t too many other occasions where you can get away with wearing it which means you miss out on that sentimental experience of wearing your wedding dress over again.
Choose A Wedding Dress You Can Wear Again
Choosing a wedding dress that is still very special but is also more appropriate for more occasions, means you get the chance to wear your now sustainable wedding dress over and over again.
Wear it for your anniversary, your birthday, and just any old day you want to feel a bit special — I mean, whoever said that your wedding will be the best day of your life didn’t take into consideration that there will be plenty more amazing and memorable days in your life for the years to come!
Choosing a sustainable wedding dress that you can wear again will extend the joy you get from this garment, and fully honour its beauty too. To me, that’s a win-win.
